how would you grade president obama in addressing climate change? >> he missed a great opportunity to be a great president. you know, when he was elected and had 70% popularity four years ago, he could have gone to the public. and like franklin roosevelt explained, that for the sake of our national defense, for the sake of the economy, for the sake of climate, we should deal with this problem in an honest way, putting a price on carbon. you know, when i was in united kingdom with anniek after -- she had a mild heart attack there, so i was stuck there for a week. this is right after he was elected before he took office. so we wrote a letter to him and explained this to him. i tried to get john holdren to deliver it to him, but he wasn't sworn in yet so he couldn't do it. >> the president's science adviser. >> yeah. but that -- it's a shame because he said he understood the problem. he said we have a planet in peril. but in a way, i don't think he was getting very good advice. i think that people were telling him well we need more solar panels and we

if you want to support governor romney or president obama, you could give $2,500 for each election. you could give the national party $38,000 a year. or you could give a super pac as much money as you want. we have contribution limits to prevent the appearance of corruption. there are rules saying they spend money on behalf of candidates but have to be independent. that independence is supposed to prevent the appearance of corruption. but this super pac's are run by close allies of the campaign. if you believe our system should regulate contributions to prevent the appearance of corruption, super pac's are a problem. if you think there is too much regulation, you would think he should restrict of regulations in the first place. it does not fit together well someone can write a check in the thousands to the president's party and then go write a check in the millions to the super pac that supports him. the same applied to mitt romney. host: we have this item. it says it is official for the first time in history that a political candidate has raised $1 billion in one campaign. presiden

i think that is a lot of what the election was about. >> in this election it has been observed that much of the advertising was predominantly negative. i would like to ask -- i know both sides of campaigns engaged in this. including an obama at that scene to insinuate that a woman -- bain as responsible for a woman losing her insurance and somehow causing her death. ads like that seem to degrade the whole political process. i wanted your comments on negative advertising. >> i agree that there are ads that degrade the political process. i saw many of them in the last campaign. many of them aimed at us. on that particular ad, that was not from the obama campaign. that was from the super pac. we made clear that we did not think that was appropriate to accuse romney of somehow being responsible for that woman's death. it was inappropriate. i should point out that that ad ran exactly one time in this whole big country. partly, i suppose, because we made at disapprobation known publicly. were there legitimate issues about bain and romney's business practices? i really believe there were, and i

if you were going into this election the weekend before, it was pretty overwhelming, obama wins. gallup had them about even. there were some conservative pollsters who thought it was going to be a romney landslide. when we think young people are going to fade away and they are not as happy with president obama. you would say look at the reality of what pollsters are funding and they would say, no, and they thought there would be waived. it became wishful pecking by people talking to each other by people who work locked in a bubble. to finally come back to where you started, our people don't like president obama and who have on fairly demonized him and i think there is an industry in terms of american media that delights in vilifying president obama and finds there's an audience for it. the reality is -- if we had talk radio in the time of a blank and, you can imagine the talk. with president kennedy, people forget the way we lionize him that he was not popular at the time he was assassinated. ronald reagan was belittled and demeaned in his time. president obama is experiencing a

i hope that president obama now that he is elected will do as good a job in tackling tough issues as he did in getting reelected. there are 535 of us and we all have ideas, and in the senate, we probably have 40, 50, or 60 of us who say we are ready to raise revenues and control entitlements. we have said that. the republican leader has said in an editorial in "wall street journal" that he would be ready to raise revenue. if i had waited for the state legislature to come up with a road program, which would be on dirt roads. the president has to seize the moment to make a proposal about revenues, and he has to go across this country and say i will give you a very tough maze. you will not get your medicare bills paid if we did not deal with that now, and you're not going to like it, but i am here to tell you that we are going to have to do it if he were to do that, if all of us were st aying we are ready to work with you to solve the problem. he is the president, and just as reagan worked key deal with tip o'neill and bill clinton did on welfare reform and president eisenhower in korea
